Escapes & Reversals

Stand-Ups and Escapes From Bottom

Getting out from the bottom is a hand-control problem first and a leg-strength problem second. The stand-up works on sequence, not on speed alone.

The stand-up is the most reliable way off the bottom, and it fails for predictable reasons. If the opponent's hands are locked on your waist when your hips leave the mat, you are simply lifting both of you and will be returned. The order matters: control a hand, build a base with the near foot, drive your hips back into the opponent, clear the remaining hand, then turn and face. Switches and sit-outs cover the cases where standing is not available.

Key points

  • Win hand control first; hips that leave the mat while the opponent's hands are locked are simply lifting both of you.
  • Step the near foot up flat, keep your weight back into the opponent, and stand with the legs rather than pulling with the arms.
  • Hold your elbows tight to your ribs as you rise so the opponent cannot slide a hook or a waist lock underneath.
  • Once standing, turn in toward the side where their grip is weakest and face them squarely before letting go.
  • A sit-out beats a rider who is high and loose, while a switch beats one who chases your hips and commits weight forward.

Common mistakes

  • Rising with your head down and weight forward, which puts your center of gravity ahead of your feet and makes the return easy.
  • Standing up before clearing the hands, which lets the opponent lock your waist and return you straight back to the mat.
  • Waiting on the whistle to see what the top wrestler does, which surrenders the start and is often penalized as inactivity.

Put it into practice

Hand control to stand-up

  1. From the bottom position, win two-on-one hand control ten times without attempting to stand at all.
  2. Add the stand-up: near foot up, hips back into the partner, clear the hand, turn and face.
  3. Have the partner return you to the mat five times in a row so you rehearse restarting immediately.
  4. Finish with thirty-second bottom periods where escaping scores and standing without hand control does not.
